Google DeepMind’s advanced Gemini model won a gold medal at the 2025 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), successfully solving 5 out of 6 problems with a total score of 35 points. This achievement marks a significant breakthrough in AI’s mathematical reasoning capabilities. The result was officially certified by the IMO, with all solutions completed within 4.5 hours and achieved through end-to-end natural language reasoning. This accomplishment demonstrates Gemini’s deep thinking abilities, including the use of parallel reasoning and reinforcement learning techniques, overcoming previous limitations that relied heavily on formal languages. In contrast, OpenAI sparked controversy by self-claiming a gold medal before the IMO closing ceremony, but did not receive official certification.
